Driveway Sealers

Why would you need to use a driveway sealer after you put in a new driveway? If you have an asphalt driveway and do not take any steps to seal it, then after a while you will notice potholes starting to develop. This is because of weathering when water gets into the cracks in the asphalt and freezes in cold temperatures. Then when it thaws again, the result is that it makes the cracks in the asphalt bigger. Even if you live in a warmer climate where it never gets below freezing, you still need to use a sealer to prevent grass from growing in the small cracks. The ultraviolet rays of the sun and spills from oil and gas can also cause damage to the driveway.

The sealer for asphalt driveways is often called black top or hot top. However, you do need to wait until the temperature rises above 50º F and when the weather forecast is not predicting rain for at least three days. When you are getting ready to apply the sealant, you must be physically prepared yourself, as it is not an easy job. Nor is it a clean job. You need to make sure that you do not get the sealant on your skin and you should wear a protector over your nose and mouth so that you do not breathe in any of the fumes.

If you have grass growing along the edge of the driveway, you should cut it back. Then when you mow the lawn, none of the grass seeds will land on the asphalt and start to grow. If you notice any oil or gas stains on the old asphalt, there are stiff brushes you can buy at the hardware store that will take them out after a vigorous scrubbing with ordinary detergent. Make sure the asphalt is clean before you start. You should wash it down with your hose and allow it to dry.

Once you do apply the sealant, you need to block off the driveway until it is completely dry. This could take a several days. Walking or driving over the driveway could ruin the sealant and it will stick to the soles of your footwear. You may track it into the house and ruin your flooring.
