Cement Driveways
The most common complaint that homeowners have
about a cement driveway is that oil and gas spills tend to sink into the
concrete leaving a stain. Have you ever though if using cat litter to get
rid of the ugly stain? Believe it or not, it actually works. The cat
litter pulls the excess oil out of the concrete. If you have a large stain,
you should cover the cat litter with newspaper and leave it overnight. The
next day you can remove the newspaper and cover the stained area with
powdered laundry detergent. Wet the detergent just enough to make a paste
and cover it again for another night.
When you take the newspaper off on the second day, remove some of the
detergent - enough so that you still have a thin layer of the paste on the
stain. Then add warm water and using a brush with stiff bristles,
vigorously scrub the area until you get the stain out. Scrub the area in
small circles adding water and detergent as you need to make the detergent
soapy. You should also scrub the area outside of the stain so that you
won't have a noticeable clean spot in the middle of your driveway.
Although the stain will still remain for a while after you clean it, it
won't be as pronounced as it once was. It will also gradually fade away so
that you won't even know where it was. Once you have the stain removed,
you do need to seal it again in order to keep it from cracking under the
elements of weather.
You can also buy special compounds at the hardware store that will remove
oil stains from the driveway. One new product on the market contains a
combination of chlorox, sodium hydroxide and detergent. It does have a
nasty odor and you do need to be careful not to let it touch your skin.
